What are the benefits of CNG?

First of all savings, since CNG (in kg) today costs much less than petrol (gasoline) and diesel. Another benefit is less engine wear. Environmental compatibility is also important: CNG does not contain aromatic hydrocarbons, which are some of the most toxic pollutants found in other fuels (benzene and lead in particular). Moreover its combustion does not produce particulates (PM10), which is one of the main causes of air pollution in our cities. Thanks to these lower emissions of pollutants, CNG-converted cars are considered ecological and can run in town centres even when road traffic is restricted owing to pollution.

What are the benefits of LPG?

First of all savings, since a litre of LPG costs less than half of a litre of petrol (gasoline). No less important is its lower environmental impact: LPG does not contain the worst pollutants found in petrol and its combustion does not produce dangerous particulates. Exhaust gas measurements are lower than for other fuels: 10-15% less carbon dioxide, 20% less carbon monoxide and 55-60% less unburned hydrocarbons. These properties mean LPG increases engine life, reduces oil consumption, and improves the quality of the environment. LPG's ecological characteristics allow LPG-fuelled cars to run even when road traffic in town centres is restricted owing to air pollution. Another benefit of LPG regards engine performance, which is substantially equivalent to when petrol is used.

Can I install LPG on a non-catalysed car?

Of course, and installing LPG makes the car ecological, so you may be eligible for certain benefits, such as being able to run in urban areas even during pollution restrictions.

If the car is new, do these systems have to be run in before using them?

No, there is no reason not to use them immediately. It is however a good idea to do a check up on the car before installing a gaseous fuel system to make sure there are no particular issues.

What cars can be converted to CNG?

If you decide to install a CNG system in your car, you must go to an authorized centre. There they will propose the right system for your specific model. It is particularly important for the ignition and electrical system to be working properly in the car to be converted. The only restrictions to CNG system installation are on some cars equipped with direct petrol (gasoline) injection engines: not all of these models may be converted. For this reason, if you need to convert this type of car, we advise contacting Bigas directly for information.

How much does a CNG system cost?

The cost varies widely depending on the model of car, the type of system needed, and the tank(s) you want to install.

The tank or tanks are an important part of the system (about 50%) and high capacity tanks have significant costs. Tanks with a capacity of 80-90 litres are normally used. This means you can do around 250-300 km on a full tank, depending on the type of car.

How long does it take to install a CNG system?

The time it takes to install varies depending on the type of car and the tanks you plan to use. On average it takes 2 to 3 working days.

Can you install a CNG system on a station wagon or minivan?

Si, è previsto dalla circolare n° 58 del 30 aprile 1996.

What cars can be converted to LPG?

The system can be installed with significant environmental benefits on all types of petrol engine, including those with carburettors, and with mechanical and electronic injection, as well as on turbocharged engines. The only restrictions to LPG system installation are on some cars equipped with direct petrol injection engines: not all of these models may be converted. For this reason, if you need to convert this type of car, we advise contacting Bigas directly for information.

How much does an LPG system cost?

The cost varies widely depending on the type of car, the type of system chosen and the tank. For a four-cylinder engine, it can range from about 800 euros for a carburettor model to about 2000 euros for a modern turbocharged Euro 6. We advise you to ask a specialist garage for a quote.

Can you install an LPG tank under the car?

Does the LPG tank take up a lot of space in the luggage compartment?

It depends on the model of car and the tank used. Classic cylindrical tanks fill about 20-30% of the luggage compartment. If you use a toroidal (doughnut shaped) tank, it can be installed in place of the spare wheel.

What state must the car be in so that it can be converted to CNG/LPG?

A petrol (gasoline) car in good general condition and, most importantly, with a well maintained ignition system is a prerequisite for it to run properly as a gaseous fuel car.
